Description
Numbers 17 and 19 are two houses built around 1843-1845, likely designed by the Brighton architect Amon Henry Wilds. They are constructed of stucco and feature a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves. Each house has two storeys and a rusticated semi-basement, with two bays. Giant fluted Ionic pilasters rise through both the ground and first floors, flanking the inner bay of each house and supporting segmental arches above the first-floor windows. The outer entrance bays are slightly recessed, with steps leading up to a square Ionic porch that has a deep entablature and corresponding pilasters on either side of the door. The houses have sash windows; the inner bays feature segmental-headed windows, while those above the porch are round-headed and set in shallow round-arched recesses. There is a string course above the basement, and the ground-floor windows have cast-iron decorative grilles. The interior has not been inspected. The houses have area railings and rails to the porch. They are part of a row of nine identical semi-detached pairs, facing a similar row of four, and together with Nos 1-35 (odd) and 24-38 (even), they form a group.
