Description

Two houses, likely built around 1843 to 1845, possibly designed by the Brighton architect Amon Henry Wilds. The houses are constructed of stucco with a hipped slate roof and overhanging eaves. Each house is two storeys high with a semi-basement, featuring two bays. Large, fluted Ionic pilasters extend through the ground and first floors, framing the inner bay of each house and supporting segmental arches above the first-floor windows. The outer entrance bays are slightly recessed, with steps leading to a square Ionic porch – the porch is missing from number 34. The porch has a deep entablature and pilasters mirroring those of the building. The sash windows in the inner bays are segmental-headed, while those above the porch are round-headed within a shallow round-arched recess. A string course runs above the basement level. Decorative cast-iron grilles are present on the ground-floor windows. The interior has not been inspected. The property includes area railings and rails to the porch. The houses are part of a row of four identical, semi-detached properties set back from the street, facing a similar row of nine. Numbers 1 to 35 (odd) and 24 to 38 (even) form a group.
