Description

Numbers 21 and 23 are two houses built around 1843-1845, likely designed by the Brighton architect Amon Henry Wilds. They are constructed of stucco and feature a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves. Each house has two storeys and a rusticated semi-basement, with two bays. Giant fluted Ionic pilasters extend through both the ground and first floors, flanking the inner bay of each house and supporting segmental arches above the first-floor windows. The outer entrance bays are slightly recessed, with steps leading up to a square Ionic porch that has a deep entablature and corresponding pilasters flanking the door. The houses have sash windows, with the inner bays featuring segmental-headed windows and the ones above the porch having round-headed windows set in shallow round-arched recesses. There is a string course above the basement and decorative cast-iron grilles on the ground-floor windows. The interior has not been inspected. The houses are part of a row of nine identical semi-detached pairs, which face a similar row of four, and together with numbers 1-35 (odd) and 24-38 (even), they form a group. The property also includes area railings and rails to the porch.
