Description

A workshop and engineering premises dating to approximately 1867-68, built for David and Andrew Derrin. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with a header bond to the curved corner ranges. The front elevation, facing Park Street and Emerson Street, is two storeys and five windows wide; the Bear Gardens elevation is four windows wide, and the rear elevation has two bays. A brick plinth is visible. The elevation is articulated into sections by five round-arched window recesses; the ground-floor windows are camber-arched, while those above are round-arched. There is a brick entablature band and a dentil cornice over the centre, forming a pedimented attic. Walls project on either side of the central range as giant pilaster strips. Flat-arched entrances are set within stucco-faced aediculates, featuring Tuscan pilasters and an entablature with a massive dentil cornice. This design is repeated on the Bear Gardens elevation, although the windows there have been rebuilt, along with the surrounding wall; the original dentil cornice remains. The plinth stops at the corner bay. A Diocletian window is present on the rear elevation. The gable facing the rear, which is of red brick, is two storeys and four windows wide, and is not of particular architectural significance. The interior was not inspected. The building represents a refined example of the "engineer's classical" style.
