Description
The Anchor Public House is a public house located on Bankside in Southwark, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with later alterations and extensions. The building is constructed of red and brown brick, featuring timber oriels and panelling, and is situated at the corner with Park Street. Part of the structure has a tiled roof with dormers, while the earlier section has its roof obscured behind a parapet. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has irregular fenestration. The entrance features rounded double doors set into the corner angle.
The main Bankside elevation includes two subsidiary entrances and tripartite sash windows with glazing bars on the ground floor, framed by gauged-brick arches. To the right of the main entrance, there is a tripartite window in a timber-panelled casing with shutters. Above this, a timber oriel in the form of a canted bay features a panelled base and three sash windows with glazing bars. The later sections to the right have first-floor windows in a similar style. The Park Street elevation also has gauged, segmental brick arches over sash windows with glazing bars, including a tripartite window to the left of the door that has a timber cornice and pilasters, suggesting it may have been a shop front.
Inside, the older section retains some original features, including a ground-floor room with an early 18th-century kitchen fireplace and some contemporary wainscoting. The staircase is also from the early 18th century. On the first floor, there is a complete mid to late 18th-century pine-panelled room known as the "Shakespeare Room," which features a wide, segmental-arched alcove. Much of the internal timberwork in the rest of the building is imitation. There is a large recent extension to the rear that is not of special interest.
