Description

Nos. 140, 142, 150, and 152 on Walworth Road are a group of seven houses built between 1793 and 1799, designed by architect Francis Hurlblatt. The buildings are constructed from yellow stock brick with stucco dressings and feature a slate mansard roof with dormers. A pediment was added to the left section (No. 152) in 1978.

The exterior consists of three storeys, an attic, and a raised basement. Nos. 140 and 142, which were the former center of the terrace, each have three bays under a pediment, adorned with a mutule cornice and a medallion featuring a relief figure in the tympanum. There is a wide flight of steps leading up to a 20th-century portico with an altered wide doorway. The ground-floor windows are round-headed and set in round-arched recesses, with a stucco band at the spring. The ground and first floors have sash windows, while the second floor features casements.

No. 150, previously Nos. 144-148, has two bays for each former house and three openings on the ground floor. It has a mutule cornice with a brick parapet above. The central door is round-headed with a cornice head and radial fanlight, while the other doors have been altered to windows. The sash windows have gauged brick arches, with round arches on the ground floor and flat arches on the upper floors. There are stucco strings at the ground-floor springs and a sill band on the first floor.

No. 152, which was formerly Nos. 150-152, is similar to No. 150 but features three bays for each former house and the late 20th-century addition of a pediment. The door is located in the outer bay, with the door to the former No. 150 replaced by a window. The basement level of Nos. 150 and 152 has been rebuilt to project and form a balcony for the raised ground floor, which is above street level. The interior has not been inspected. This group of houses is part of a terrace originally built by Hurlblatt and has been remodelled as a unified composition for the Labour Party Headquarters.
