Description
The railings, gates, and piers to Old St Mary's Churchyard were constructed around 1873 in the Gothic Revival style. The name of Young and Co., Founders, Pimlico, is cast into the locks. The structure is made of cast iron, with a low wall built of brick in Flemish bond and stone coping, while the piers are in English bond. It runs along the length of the old churchyard on Newington Butts, consisting of 25 bays and 2 gates, with a short return to Churchyard Row. At each end, there are square-section piers topped with stone capstones. The railings are set on a black brick wall with chamfered stone coping. Each bay is framed by a pair of thick uprights, square in section, with heads that twist into flower petals and a diagonal brace at the rear of each. The intermediate uprights feature spear points and twisted tridents, and the top rails are designed as a floral frieze. The continuation of the fence along Churchyard Row is from the late 20th century and is not included in this listing. This structure was built when the medieval church was relocated to a site further south along Kennington Park Road, and the churchyard was transformed into a public garden.
