Description
The British Red Cross Society and Vallence House are a pair of houses located in Peckham Rye, Southwark, built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from amber brick with stucco dressings, featuring a moulded stucco cornice and blocking course. Each house has three storeys and a basement, with three bays. Number 160 has a later three-storey, one-bay extension on the right, while number 162 has a two-storey, one-bay extension on the left.
Both houses have stucco Doric porches in slightly recessed entrance bays, with doors that have cornice heads and patterned fanlights, flanked by fluted Ionic half columns. The inner two bays feature ground- and first-floor windows set in round-arched recesses, with a stucco string at the spring. All main windows are sashes with flat, gauged-brick arches; number 160 has glazing bars. There are decorative iron grilles on the ground-floor and some first-floor windows, along with a ground-floor stucco sill band. The interior has not been inspected. Numbers 152-166, which are even-numbered, form a group with these houses.
