Description
The Church of St Antholin is located on Nunhead Lane in Southwark and was built in 1877 by Ewan Christian. It was restored after suffering war damage in 1957 by Laurence King. The church is constructed of red brick in the Early English style and features lancet windows. It has an aisled layout and is of special interest due to its reredos, which comes from Wren's Church of St Antholin on Watling Street, demolished in the 1870s.
Inside, the timber structure, which was also damaged but skillfully restored, includes fluted Corinthian half-columns that support a three-bay entablature with segmental pediments on either side. The central section features blank arches with gold angels' heads in the spandrels above the decalogue, and acanthus carving on the panel beneath. The flanking sections are adorned with swags of carved fruit and flowers between the capitals, inscribed with the Lord's Prayer and the Creed. The scrolled cresting is likely a replacement.
