Description

St John's and St Clements School, formerly known as Ady's Road Board School, was built between 1883 and 1884 by architect T.J. Bailey for the School Board for London. This Board School is constructed from red brick in English bond, featuring banded rustication on the ground floor along with pilasters and bands on the upper floors, while the upper-floor walls are made of stock brick. The roofs are tiled.

The building has a cross wing plan, with a south wing projecting to the west and a north wing to the east. On the axis with Ondine Road, there is a large canted bay with six windows, topped by an octagonal roof with a cupola. The structure has three storeys over a basement, and most openings are flat-arched, many set within segmental-arched recesses.

The hall block features cross wings with a similar design, including a short elevation with a gabled dormer and a cast stone plaque. The hall block extends north from the right-hand wing, with the first and second floors divided into five bays by giant pilasters and corner pilasters. The third floor was raised in the early 20th century.

An unusual feature to the north of the hall block is an oversized canted bay-cum-turret, which has paired windows on each facet, with high stacks on the short returns of the bay serving as framing elements. The ground-floor openings of the hall block are segmental-arched. The south-facing elevation of the south cross wing is highlighted by two Dutch gabled dormers, with the right one slightly projecting and framed by pilasters. Each of the first-floor windows in the gabled range on the left is set in a deep segmental-arched recess, and stacks are aligned with each of the gabled dormers. The north cross wing mirrors many of these features. The interior has not been inspected. The school forms a group with the Church of St John the Evangelist on East Dulwich Road.
