Description

Number 23 is a house that has also been used as a hotel, built in 1791, with outer wings likely added in the early 19th century. It is attributed to M Searles and constructed from yellow brick with stucco dressings, featuring a cornice and blocking course.

The main block is three storeys high with three bays, while the side wings are taller at two storeys and include a basement, with one bay each. A projecting entrance loggia runs along the ground floor of the main block, featuring curved steps on either side. The loggia is covered by a lead canopy supported by four pairs of Roman Doric columns, which are adorned with a triglyph frieze and mutule cornice. The rear porch wall has four corresponding pairs of pilasters with long French doors between each pair.

The wings have large, round-arched openings on the ground floor, each containing two pairs of full-length casement windows with a cornice head. The left wing features a cast-iron guard with a feather pattern. The first and second-floor sash windows in the main block have flat, gauged-brick arches and glazing bars, with a stucco band at the second floor. The outer wings contain tripartite sash windows with glazing bars under gauged brick, set within segmental arches.

Inside, the original staircase features delicate iron balusters, some of which have an anthemion pattern. The interior has not been inspected. The property also includes wrought-iron railings at the porch and steps. It was known as Durlstone around the turn of the century and later became the Durlstone Manor Hotel for a period.
