Description
London Bridge Hospital's Riverside Block, located behind Tooley Street, is a wharf building dating from the 1860s, constructed as a rebuilding after the fire of 1861. The structure is made of yellow brick, with stock brick and rendered dressings. The main river-facing elevation is seven storeys high and consists of eleven bays. The ground level, which has been altered, features two storeys with tall segmental-arched openings between pilasters that support heavy bases for a giant order of brick pilasters. These rise to a deep rendered entablature with a pedimental blocking course, and the frieze is inscribed with the name of the building. The segmental-headed windows and hatch ranks, which are now fenestrated, are symmetrically arranged and recessed between the pilasters. The simpler south elevation has a slight concave curve and consists of six bays, articulated by giant brick pilasters that support a rendered entablature, which returns to projecting full-height wings, with the right wing being rebuilt and projecting slightly further. The interior has not been inspected. The building is now connected by a glazed walkway to Nos 17-25 (Odd) Tooley Street.
