Description

47 and 49 Tooley Street is a warehouse built in the 1860s, now used as offices. It was designed by W Snooke and H Stock and features yellow brick with stucco and artificial stone dressings. The building has undergone restoration and interior rebuilding in the late 20th century, including roof extensions above the cornice.

The exterior consists of four storeys, including a recent mezzanine level on the ground floor. The altered ground floor has tall, segmental-headed openings with keystones, now filled in at the top to create the mezzanine, while the area below serves as a walkway. The ground floor also has stucco banded rustication and slightly recessed rounded corner angles. The upper three floors are distinguished by colossal round-arched recesses with architraves and keystones that support a cornice, resting on a blocking course above the ground floor. There is a moulded string at the spring of the arches. The first and second floors feature segmental-headed windows within inner, segmental-arched recesses, while the third floor has round-headed windows in round-arched recesses, with moulded sills inside the recesses that continue as a plain band outside. The returns of the building also have similar treatments.

Historically, this is the last remaining warehouse building of the former Cotton's Wharf, which was largely destroyed in the fire of Tooley Street in 1861 and was quickly rebuilt. It was converted into a cold store in the 1880s by the owners of the adjacent Hay's Wharf. The other buildings on the site have been replaced by late 20th-century constructions. The interior has not been inspected, but the building has group value with the adjacent Hay's Wharf buildings to the east.
