Description

The Shipwrights Arms is a public house dating from the mid-to-late 19th century, with a ground floor added in the late 19th or early 20th century. The building is constructed of stucco and brick in English bond, and has a parapeted roof. Its unusual shape follows the curved corner site, with a three-window range facing Bermondsey Street, a rebated corner range featuring a full-height segmental bay, and a five-window range on the return.

The external appearance features a round-arched entrance at the corner, flanked by colonnettes in rebated jambs and adorned with a garland above the arch. Rusticated piers of the Ionic order, topped with pedimented and garlanded brackets, are present on either side of the corner entrance, as well as on the party walls and return. Thin Ionic colonnettes define the glazed ground-floor bays while a plain entablature band serves as a fascia for the signs. A distinctive feature is the crouching Caryatid with outstretched arms located beneath the corner segmental bay. Giant pilasters flank the corner range and are repeated on the party walls and return. Upper-floor windows are flat-arched, with those on the first floor featuring eared and shouldered architraves, an entablature with a fretted frieze, and alternating segmental and triangular pediments. The corner windows on both floors and the centre windows on the main elevation and the second bay of the return are tripartite. A springing band sits above the first floor. Keyed lintels and projecting sills on brackets are visible on the second floor. A plain entablature band steps out over the giant pilasters, finishing with a projecting cornice. Secondary entrances are located on the left party wall and on the return. The interior of the building was not inspected during the listing process.
