Description

51 and 53 Southwark Street is a warehouse built between 1865 and 1874. It is constructed of stock brick with stone dressings, and the roof is concealed behind a brick and stone bracketed cornice. The building has a rectangular plan with curved corners. It stands five storeys tall and features an eight-window range, with tripartite windows at the corners except for the top floor, where the windows are quadripartite. The returns have three-window ranges, with a hoist bay in the center of each. Most openings are segmental-arched, with doubled windows and round arches on the top floor. The side lights of the tripartite corner windows are also round-arched. Many windows still have their original sashes: one-over-one on the top floor, three-over-three on the second and third floors, and six-over-six on the first floor. Some sashes on the second floor are missing, and the ground-floor windows were boarded over at the time of the survey. The ground floor features a stone cornice supported by rusticated brick piers with stone capitals. The side entrance on the curved east corner has a segmental keyed head, with round-arched windows on either side. The main elevation has a centrally placed entrance with two doorways that have segmental heads, flanked by Peterhead granite colonnettes with Corinthian capitals. All three six-panel doors under segmental fanlights are original. There is a lower brick structure at the rear with segmental-arched openings. The interior was not inspected. A tender for the building was mentioned in the "Builder" in 1865, but it does not appear to have been occupied until 1874. The building forms a group with No. 49 Southwark Street.
