Description

Ten terraced houses were built in the early 19th century. They are constructed with stucco to the ground floor, treated to resemble banded rustication, and brick in a Flemish bond above. The roofs are slate, previously turned up and now renewed. Each house has three storeys over a basement, and two windows wide. They all follow a consistent design, with a flat-arched entrance reached by steps, flanked by a pair of Tuscan pilasters, of which the pair at Number 31 is missing. The entrance is within a round-arched porch with a moulded architrave and a keystone shaped like a bearded man's head. To the right of the entrance is a nearly square window with an architrave and a keyed lintel, cast to resemble a woman's head. This window retains its original three 12-pane casements and transoms. A moulded storey band sits between the ground and first floors, decorated in an egg-and-dart pattern. The first floor is treated as an elliptical-arched arcade of two bays, each containing a flat-arched window, with the arches and lintel constructed from light-coloured brick and a springing band. There are paired segmental-arched windows on the second floor. A cornice leads to shallow eaves. The party walls extend above the roofline. Chimney stacks are located on the party walls, and the junctions between the units are recessed. The interiors were not inspected. The original design of cast-iron railings remains on all but Numbers 27 and 35; cast-iron balconettes of the original design are present on the first floor of Numbers 31 and 35, although part of the balconette at Number 35 is missing. These houses are part of a group with Numbers 16-64 (even) on Trafalgar Avenue.
