Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist was built between 1832 and 1834, designed by architect Edward Blore. An extension to the chancel was added in 1882. The church showcases an Early English and decorated Gothic style, constructed from grey gault bricks with stone dressings and featuring slated roofs. It has a six-bay clerestoryed nave, along with north and south aisles, a chancel, and a south chapel, topped by a steeple at the southwest corner.
Architectural details include triple lancets in the aisles and paired lancets in the clerestory, with plain parapets on both. The west end features a triple light geometrical tracery with cuspless oculi. The main entrance is gabled and located under a three-stage tower that has angle buttresses and a crocketed niche on the center stage. The steeple is supported by flying buttresses and adorned with two tiers of pinnacles. The chancel is lower than the nave and buttressed with corner pinnacles, and it includes a five-light east window. There is a vestry extension to the north, which is not of interest.
