Description
Martyrs' Memorial is a memorial built in 1878 by J T Newman. It is a hexagonal monument made of buff terracotta in the Gothic style. Each face of the monument features inscribed panels, and there is a relief plaque on the east side. The corners have triple angle shafts with stiff leaf capitals that come together to create a rich frieze. Each face has a gabled oversailing canopy supported by richly ornamented brackets, with diaper patterns underneath. The monument is topped with a twelve-sided spire and a crown. It was erected to commemorate Protestant martyrs who were burned nearby in 1556. The terracotta used for the monument was produced by Johnson & Co from Ditchling, Sussex.
