Description

The building comprises two mid-19th century pairs of houses, numbered 223 to 229 on New Cross Road. Each house is three storeys high with a sunken basement. They have a single window within a projecting central panel, and another window set back within the outer entrance section. The facades are constructed of yellow stock brick with a stucco frieze, a dentil cornice, and a parapet. Gauged flat brick arches feature above the second-floor sash windows, which incorporate glazing bars, as do all the windows within the entrance sections. A moulded architrave and cill band are present on the first-floor windows. The narrow, three-light ground-floor sash windows have flat stucco surrounds, console bracketed cornices and pediments. Cast iron railings are in front of these windows. Number 229 has a single-storey right-hand extension with one window and double carriage gates. Modified entablature porches provide access to the set-back four-panel doors; numbers 223 to 227 have console-bracketed cornices, while number 229 incorporates side lights and a fanlight. Numbers 207 to 229 (odd) form a group.
