Description
The Church of St Anselm, built between 1932 and 1933 by Adshead and Ramsey, is located on Kennington Road. It was constructed on the foundations of an earlier church, the building of which was interrupted by World War I. This church features a simple Early Christian basilica design made of stock brick, with a corbelled eaves cornice of shaped bricks and a pantiled roof. It has low, pent aisles that do not extend the full length of the church and chamfered, round-arched window openings. The church is oriented unusually, with a large east portal that includes a carving of St Anselm with a lion and lamb in the tympanum. Inside, the tall, barn-like space has timber king post roof trusses, a gallery over the entrance, and a baldacchino over the altar. The arcade capitals are cushion-shaped and feature carvings of plants and animals by A H Gerrard. Additionally, there is a carved font by Derrick Frith.
