Description
The Church of St Peter is a Grade II* listed building located on Leigham Court Road, built in 1871 by architect Drew, with the west end completed in 1888 by Fellowes Prynne. This impressive church stands on a raised site and features a very tall nave with low pent aisles. The tall chancel includes an apse and a south chapel, along with a north chancel aisle and transept, both of which have extensions. At the west end, there is a bowed baptistery with a high undercroft beneath the nave. The church is flanked by octagonal turrets supported by flying buttresses, and it has a high west gable adorned with a large wheel window. The other windows are traceried in a similar style. The exterior is constructed of stock brick with extensive decorative elements, primarily in red brick and stone, including bands, diapering, and window dressings. The roofs are high-pitched and tiled, except for the aisles.
Inside, the church features a five-bay nave with a tall pointed arcade supported by round stone piers, and the polychromy continues throughout. The arches have facetted cut brick decoration. The nave roof consists of arch-braced collar beams that alternate with scissor trusses, with the principals resting on corbelled shafts. The chancel has a ribbed barrel roof, panelled walls, sedilia, and a piscina, along with an elaborate reredos. There are wrought iron screens leading to the south chapel.
