Description

This is a substantial terrace of around 1720, with alterations and rebuilding following war damage. The terrace comprises numbers 12 to 21 on the north side of Clapham Common and extends over varying widths, with three storeys and basements. The main fabric is brown brick, topped with parapets. Windows are flush-framed sash windows with glazing bars, set within segmental arches with bright red brick dressings. Flights of steps, some bowed or curved, lead to the doors, and feature wrought iron handrails.

Number 12 has three windows and a tiled mansard roof with altered dormers, and a first-floor band. The doorcase is made of wood, with panelled pilasters, a plain frieze and cornice. Number 13, with six windows, has a brick dentil cornice at second-floor level and a panelled parapet. The wood doorcase features fluted Corinthian pilasters and a segmental pediment, alongside a one-storey round bow at the left. Number 14 has a four-window front, with a doorcase similar to number 13, and a former keystone dated 1720 inserted into a wall on the right. Numbers 15, 16 and 17 are each three windows wide, with a symmetrical grouping; number 16 has an extra storey with brick scrolls at the sides, and mansard roofs with pedimented dormers. A first-floor string runs along these properties, with a pedimented first-floor centre window. The wood doorcases have plain pilasters and broken segmental pediments.

Numbers 18, 19 and 20 each have three windows, with number 18 possessing an old tiled hipped mansard with dormers. A first-floor string is present, and aprons sit below the second-floor windows. The wood doorcases on numbers 18 and 19 feature carved console brackets and hoods, and are paired. Number 21, with seven windows, has a panelled parapet with a dormer above on the right, a dentil cornice at second-floor level, a first-floor string, and a three-centred carriage archway on the left. The wood doorcase is of Corinthian design.
