Description
The drinking fountain, located approximately 500 metres southeast of the Church of Holy Trinity in Clapham, was built in 1884 as a gift from the United Kingdom Temperance and General Provident Institution. It features a stout polished granite column that expands into a square plinth. Each face of the plinth has a basin with a lion head spout, although the basin covers and jets are modern. The fountain has an octagonal base with a curved step beneath each basin. Atop the fountain is a heroic-sized bronze group sculpted by A V Kreling, depicting a standing woman holding a jug and embracing a seated man who is drinking from a bowl and holding a crutch. The bronze was cast by Ferd Miller of Munich.
