Description

Nos 43 to 47 on Clapham Common North Side, built in 1860 by J T Knowles, form a very large terrace of five-storey buildings with basements and three windows each. The end houses are designed as pavilions featuring tall, slated French Renaissance roofs. The buildings are constructed of grey brick with stucco dressings, which include a deep moulded and modillioned cornice at the eaves, string courses, and a balcony with leafy openwork panels at the first floor level. There are also openwork foliage screens above the doors and windows. The patterned cast iron railings on the third-floor balcony match the top rail of the pavilion roofs. The sash windows include round-headed designs on the ground, first, and top floors, set within round-arched recesses that have moulded architraves. Additionally, there are cast iron area railings.
