Description

This is a High Victorian symmetrical group of buildings, constructed in the 19th century, with the Alexandra Hotel as its central element and two flanking wings. The central block comprises four storeys and an attic, featuring five windows, while the wings are of four flower storeys and an attic each, with four windows. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with polychrome brick dressings. The roof is fishscale slated, incorporating a mansard in the centre with gabled dormers featuring large boards. Behind the central mansard is a large dome, banded with plain and fishscale slates, with patterned cast iron railing to the top platform. The windows are sash windows with four-centred heads on the upper floors; the first floor features round-headed long casements leading to a balcony. The ground floor of the hotel is ornamented with terra-cotta, featuring alternating windows and doors. Modern shops occupy the ground floors of the wings.
