Description
The tomb of Sir Charles Newton, who died in 1886, is located in Kensal Green Cemetery. It features a marble headstone that was fallen and broken at the time of the survey in 1998. The headstone has an anthemion terminal and an inset relief of a seated woman, which may be a re-used antique piece, designed to imitate an Attic grave-stele from the 4th century BC. Sir Charles Newton was a prominent classical archaeologist known for discovering the tomb of King Mausolus at Halicarnassus, one of the wonders of the Ancient world, and he served as an important Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum.
