Description
The tomb of William Cavendish-Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland, who died in 1879, is located in Kensal Green Cemetery. It was created by McDonald, Field & Co., masons from Aberdeen. The tomb features a pink Peterhead granite slab set within a very large plot that is bordered by kerbs and posts made of grey granite. The design includes a two-stage slab with coped upper surfaces resting on a base of York stone, positioned at the center of the plot. The boundary posts, which were once connected by bronze railings and chains, are cylindrical with round caps. This enclosure also contains several other family tombs and is noted as the largest plot in the cemetery. The Duke, often referred to as the "Mole Duke," was a wealthy landowner known for his interest in underground architecture in his later years.
