Description
This is a terrace of three houses located at 15-19 Aubrey Walk, built between 1951 and 1952 by Raymond Erith for the Messrs Alexander. The houses are constructed of brick with a rendered garden front and feature a slate roof that has four symmetrically placed brick stacks and a wooden eaves soffit. The buildings are three storeys high and have a rectangular plan, with large projecting bins on the garden front.
The north-facing road front presents a symmetrical five-bay design, featuring blind windows on all storeys beside the centre. The outer bays contain windows with margin-glazed sashes, while there are no windows on the first floor, which is set in single-storey recesses. A central panelled door is located under a low first-floor window, and there is a low round-arched window on the second floor, both of which are relatively small. There are also doors with arches at the extreme ends of the facade and an additional door to the right of the right-hand ground floor blind window. All openings and recesses on this front, as well as those on the returns, have gauged heads.
The south elevation consists of seven bays with large margin-light casements. The outer pairs of bays project slightly from the line of the facade in a semi-circular bay. The windows flanking the centre are of tripartite proportions, although not glazed in a tripartite manner. The centre bay features a small arched window on the second floor, a small square window on the first floor, and a margin half-glazed door with a transom light on the ground floor. A two-storey verandah masks the central three bays, supported by cast-iron supports below and wooden supports above, topped with a pitched lead roof.
The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest. This terrace is considered one of Erith's most successful compositions.
