Description
Thorpe Lodge is a villa built in the early 19th century by John Tanner, with embellishments added between 1904 and 1912 by W K Shirley. The exterior is roughcast, featuring a garden front that is two storeys high and has three bays, including a central two-storey bow window. The windows are square-headed, with sashed windows above and casements below, while the ground floor center has a tripartite window arrangement. The building has tall chimneys. The entrance facade includes early 20th-century extensions, notably a buff brick porch with an arched and gabled canopy. There are fine metal gates at the north-west entrance, decorated with oak leaf motifs and dated 1910. The villa is listed mainly for its exceptional early 20th-century Art Nouveau interiors, which include decorative panelling, murals, plasterwork, metalwork, and tilework.
