Description
This former fire station, built in 1892, is a notable example of red brick construction with red sandstone dressings. The building stands four storeys tall, with an additional two storeys in the roof, and features four main bays. At the center, there is a two-storey gable that displays the date in wrought iron ties. The central section includes two doorways for fire engines, which have segmental heads and likely retain their original doors. The ground and first floor windows are adorned with mullions and transoms, topped with pediments that feature relief carvings of tools associated with firefighting. Buttresses are positioned between the bays, each capped with bells. Above, there are sashed windows with applied pilasters, a cornice, a tiled mansard roof, and gables. Tall chimneys rise from the sides, and a central cupola made of timber and lead is topped with a ball and spike. The inclusion of firefighting symbols adds particular interest to the building.
