Description

14 Alwyne Place is a single house that dates from the early to late 18th century or early 19th century and has undergone significant alterations. It features purplish and yellow brick set in Flemish bond and has a roof covered with 20th-century tiles. The house is three storeys tall and has two gabled wings that form a T shape in plan. One wing runs parallel to the street at the rear, while the other is at the front with its gable facing the street.

The entrance is located in the front wing, which faces south, and is framed by Ionic columns with an entablature and pediment. The front has three bays of flat-arched windows with gauged brick heads; the ground-floor sashes are recessed, while those on the first floor are set flush, likely a result of 20th-century work. The building has a parapet and a 20th-century mansard roof with dormers.

The rear wing has three storeys and two bays on the south side, featuring flat-arched windows with gauged brick heads. It has a truncated gable that fronts a half-hipped roof. On the north side of the front wing, there are two first-floor windows with cambered arches made of red gauged brick. The immediate street front includes a single-storey parapeted screen wall with three blank windows and a 20th-century reproduction doorcase.

There is a wing on the north side of the main house, which is part of number 14 and has a ridge that runs parallel with the street. This wing is presumably three storeys high and features brickwork from the 18th century or earlier. Adjacent to it, there is a lower, two-storey parapeted wing made of yellow brick from the late 18th century or early 19th century, which has also been much reworked. The garden front has not been inspected.
