Description

Numbers 44-50 are a row of terraced houses built around 1840, located on the northeast side of Canonbury Road in Islington. They are constructed from yellow brick laid in Flemish bond, with a roof that is obscured by a parapet. The houses rise four storeys above a basement and feature two windows on each floor. The basement and ground floor are finished in stucco, with the ground floor showcasing banded rustication.

Access to the houses is via steps leading up to flat-arched entrances. The doorcases are adorned with thin pilasters, a cornice, and an overlight, while the broad doors are divided into three vertical sections. The ground-floor windows are flat-arched and framed by an architrave of panelled Doric pilasters, and they are slightly recessed.

The first- and second-floor windows are also recessed between brick pilaster strips. The first-floor windows are flat-arched and designed with piano nobile proportions, featuring Doric impost blocks, an entablature, and a panel of Greek key ornament above. The second-floor windows are round-arched, with an apron, a stucco impost block, and an archivolt set against a plain stucco panel. All first- and second-floor windows are recessed and fitted with 6/6 sash windows, most of which have been renewed.

The houses have a stucco cornice and a stuccoed attic storey, with windows set in recessed panels. The subsidiary cornice and blocking course have a decorative profile that breaks back and forth. Additionally, there are area railings with torch flambe finials for numbers 44-48.
