Description

The former caretaker's lodge and gatehouse at St Bartholomew's Medical College was built between 1873 and 1874 by Edward I'Anson for Merchant Taylors' School. It is constructed of red brick with Portland stone bands and dressings, topped with a slate roof and featuring a brick stack.

The building has a square plan with a circular stair turret at the northwest corner and a porch at the northeast. Designed in the French Gothic style, it stands two storeys high and has a one-window range. The porch includes short offset corner buttresses, a moulded stone plinth and cornice, and a stone-coped parapet. The doorways on either side have roll-moulded stone architraves set within chamfered pointed arches made of gauged brick. Above, flat arches of gauged brick sit over hollow-moulded stone-mullioned and transomed one- and two-light windows. A chamfered stone arch with a hoodmould features a coat of arms above the porch. The building also has stepped brick coursing beneath a cyma-moulded stone cornice, a steeply-pitched hipped roof, an external lateral stack to the west, and a hipped dormer to the north.

Inside, the porch boasts a gauged brick quadripartite vault and a gauged brick pointed arch over panelled doors with trefoiled glazed panels. There is a newel staircase. The porch connects to a gatepier with wrought-iron gates leading to a small gatehouse opposite, which is designed in a similar style and features a shouldered architrave to its doorway. This gatehouse is attached to the northwest corner of the Warden's House.
