Description
The Warden's House and gatehouse at St Bartholomew's Medical College, along with its railings, was built in 1894 by W. Hilton Nash for Merchant Taylors' School. This former headmaster's house, now serving as the dean's house, is constructed of red brick with buff limestone bands and dressings, topped with a gabled tiled roof and brick stacks. The building features a double-depth plan and is designed in a domestic Tudor style with Flemish detailing on the gables.
It stands four storeys high over a basement, with a triple-gabled front that has a five-window range. The central flat-arched entrance is framed by quatrefoil spandrels and an ogee-headed inner architrave topped with a poppyhead finial. The windows are moulded stone mullioned and transomed, featuring up to three leaded lights, with trefoiled lights located to the right of the entrance. The outer bays are two-storey canted, each adorned with a trefoiled panelled frieze and a coved trefoiled cornice beneath a crenellated parapet. A polygonal oriel window on the left corner displays carved panels beneath trefoiled leaded lights, accompanied by a moulded stone cornice featuring foliage and head carvings. Continuous storey bands with carved foliage friezes include the insignia of the Merchant Taylors' Company, and there are moulded stone finials atop the carved stone tops and gables. A similar double-gabled return can be found facing The Green, which includes a square oriel window.
Inside, the building features panelled doors and a panelled ceiling in the first-floor room. There is an extension at the rear, and the area railings are designed with scrolled standards and spike finials.
