Description
This is a block of firemen's flats dating from 1884-5. It was designed by William Wimble for the London Salvage Corps, and is associated with their station at 90-92 Upper Street. The building is constructed of yellow brick in English bond, with dressings in red brick and gauged red brick. It features cast and wrought iron galleries, with a parapet obscuring the roof. The flats occupy five storeys, with access to upper floors provided by galleries supported on cast-iron columns with foliage capitals. Each flat is accessed through an entrance flanked by a single window to the left and two windows to the right, with all openings having segmental arches and gauged red brick surrounds. A staircase is housed within a recessed wing on the east side, while a corresponding wing on the west side has been rebuilt to incorporate a lift. The walls of the rebuilt wing are decorated with courses of red brick. The fifth-floor galleries are under a lean-to roof, and the gallery railings are likely a replacement design.
