Description

These are a row of terraced houses, dating from around 1845, located on the north side of Gerrard Road in Islington. The houses are built of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco sections. The roof is hidden behind a parapet. The row is three storeys high, with a basement, and originally had two windows on each level. Numbers 44 to 47 project slightly forward.

The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor decorated by banded rustication. There is a round-arched entrance with pilaster jambs, a cornice, and a fanlight; though the detail of the entrance is largely lost on numbers 42 and 43. Original panelled doors remain at numbers 44, 46-47. The ground floor windows are round-arched, while the upper floor windows are flat-arched with gauged brick heads, and have original sash windows to numbers 42-44, 46 (on the ground and first floors), 47, and 48. A stucco cornice and blocking course are present on numbers 42 and 43, but are missing from the rest of the row. The upper storeys of numbers 48 and 49 have been substantially rebuilt. Cast-iron railings are present at the front area. The buildings are included on the list for their contribution to the area’s group value.
