Description

Numbers 340-390 (even) and attached railings form a terrace of early 19th-century houses, now largely offices, located on the south side of City Road, Islington. The houses were embellished in the mid-19th century. They are constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond with stucco dressings, and have roofs of Welsh and artificial slate; numbers 374-8 are painted. The buildings are arranged over a basement and four storeys, with two windows visible on each elevation except for the former numbers 360-364, which now present a six-window frontage.

The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the former numbers 362-4 painted. Numbers 340 to the former 360 and numbers 366-370 have plain stucco with scored detailing suggesting ashlar, while numbers 372-392 have a rusticated ground floor with vermiculated keystones over all openings. The entrances are round-arched, except for the former number 364, which has a flat arch. The doorcases feature varying details including reeding, semi-circular mouldings, cornices, fluted pilaster jambs, panelled pilaster jambs and modillion cornices. Fanlights with decorative glazing are above the entrances of numbers 342-346, 350-352, 382-384, and 388-92. Original panelled doors are found at numbers 340-346, 350-352, 356, 360, 372, 380-382.

The windows are flat-arched, with moulded stucco architraves above those on the upper floors. First-floor windows have pediments on consoles, and second-floor windows have eared architraves, except at numbers 388-92, which have only three storeys. Bracketed balconies with iron railings are present at numbers 352 to the former 360. Original sash windows remain at numbers 340 (second floor), 346 (second and third floors), 350 (second floor), 352 (second and third floors), 360-364 (second and third floors), 366 (second floor), 370 (ground, second and third floors), 374-376 (second and third floors), 378 (second floor), 382 (ground, second and third floors), 384 (ground and third floors), and 388 (second floor). Vermiculated chamfered quoins mark the junction between numbers 386 and 388. The modillion cornice has bracketed stops, although these details are lost on numbers 374-378. A modelled lion rampant sits atop the ends of the party walls, except at numbers 340-346, 352, 366-368, 374-378, and 382-388. Numbers 372 and 396 have balustraded parapets. Cast-iron railings are present to the steps and area of numbers 346, 350, 358, 366, and numbers 374-7.
