Description
Nos. 1-11 (odd) Canonbury Lane form a terrace of houses built between 1765 and 1785 by Thomas Bird. Number 1 is likely from this period as well. The houses are constructed of brick, rendered with stucco, and have roofs of Welsh slate. They are three storeys high with a basement. Numbers 3 and 5, 9 and 11 each have two windows, number 1 has one window, and number 7 has three. Number 1 has a side entrance and windows to each floor consisting of broad, tripartite sashes with a moulded architrave and a floating cornice. Numbers 3-11 have round-arched entrances; number 3 features moulded pilaster jambs and a cornice, a fanlight, and a panelled door. Numbers 5-11 have panelled wooden doorcases with pilasters, a cornice, and consoles supporting open pediments. Number 5’s fanlight has decorative glazing bars, while numbers 9 and 11 have panelled doors. Upper windows are flat-arched with moulded architraves and floating cornices to the first floor. Almost all the windows are recessed, except those on number 5, and the upper windows of number 7 are wider, with 8/8 sashes, differing from the standard 6/6. An eaves cornice runs along the top of the houses. A dormer is present on number 9. Chimney stacks are situated on the party walls between the properties. The front is protected by area railings with spear and urn finials.
