Description
These former office buildings, now offices, stand at 90-92 Upper Street, Islington. They were constructed between 1884 and 1885 and designed by William Wimble. The buildings are of red brick with terracotta dressings, though the terracotta is now painted, and feature glazed blue brick detailing. A parapet obscures the roof. The structure is three storeys and has a four-window front. All the openings are flat-arched. The ground floor has a plinth of blue brick, rising to about eight feet, above which is brown glazed brick, then red gauged brick with terracotta detailing, and four pilasters supporting an entablature. There is an entrance on the right, a window to the right of that, and a wider entrance on the left, designed for fire engines. Late 20th-century glazing has been installed in all the ground-floor openings. The upper windows are grouped in pairs, with the window head cut back in an ogee profile and each window featuring a fluted keystone and sill band. The first-floor windows have a broad springing band of terracotta decorated with festoons and Japanese disks. Terracotta panels depicting sunflowers are found between the groups of windows on the second floor. Storey bands run across the heads of the keystones. A dentil cornice sits above, topped by a parapet engraved with "LONDON SALVAGE CORPS" set between rosette ornaments.
