Description
The monument is a headstone commemorating Thomas Rosewell, located within the south enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. It was renewed in 1867. Constructed from Portland stone, the monument consists of an upright slab with a shaped top and a small footstone at its base. An inscription reads: 'Thomas Rosewell / Nonconformist Minister / Rotherhithe / Died 1692 / Tried for High Treason under the infamous Jeffries / see state trials 1681.' A secondary inscription records the 1867 renewal by a descendant. Thomas Rosewell (1630-92) was a Presbyterian minister and writer known for his involvement in the treason trials of the 1680s. Initially a silk-weaver, he later pursued clerical education and served as a minister in Rotherhithe. He was accused of sedition and tried for high treason under Lord Chief Justice George Jeffreys, initially sentenced to death but later pardoned. Bunhill Fields Burial Ground was first enclosed in 1665 and became a principal Nonconformist cemetery, containing the graves of notable figures. The monument is designated at Grade II for its commemoration of a significant late 17th-century Dissenting minister and its group value within the Grade I registered Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.
