Description
The monument to Joseph Waddington is a Grade II listed headstone located in the east enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, dating from 1786. It is made of slate and features an upright slab with a shaped top. The front of the slab is decorated with a border of repeating lozenge designs. The top section is adorned with incised floral ornamentation, and similar carving can be found at the base. The inscription includes a simple memorial to Joseph Waddington, who died in 1786, along with a verse epitaph, separated by a decorative band.
Bunhill Fields was established as a burial ground in 1665 and became a significant Nonconformist cemetery due to its location just outside the City of London and its independence from any established church. It is the final resting place of notable figures such as John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, and William Blake. The cemetery was closed for burials in 1853, converted into a public park in 1867, and underwent re-landscaping after war damage in 1964-65.
The monument is recognized for its well-preserved late 18th-century craftsmanship, featuring high-quality carved text and decoration, and it holds group value with other listed tombs in the east enclosure of the historically significant burial ground.
