Description
The tomb with railings in the East enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is a chest tomb made of Portland stone, featuring a simple stone slab on a low moulded base, surrounded by spear-topped wrought-iron railings that have urn finials at the corners and mid-points.
Bunhill Fields was established as a burial ground in 1665 and became London's main Nonconformist cemetery due to its location just outside the City boundary and its independence from any Established church. It is the burial site of notable figures such as John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, and William Blake. The cemetery was closed for burials in 1853, converted into a public park in 1867, and underwent re-landscaping after war damage in 1964-1965.
This tomb is designated for its late-Georgian style and the fact that it retains its original railed enclosure. It is part of the Grade I registered Bunhill Fields Burial Ground and holds group value with other listed tombs in the east enclosure.
