Description

The Cheeswright family monument is located within the South Enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Constructed around 1801, it is made of sandstone and takes the form of an upright stone slab with a horned and arched top. The eastern face, partially repaired with cement, commemorates various members of the Cheeswright family, with dates of death between 1801 and 1813. The western face is inscribed in remembrance of Elizabeth White (died 1824), daughter of Samuel and Hannah Cheeswright. This inscription praises her virtues and character, describing her as "the meekest of Women and the best of Wives and of Mothers," and notes her esteemed reputation among relatives and acquaintances.

Bunhill Fields was first enclosed as a burial ground in 1665 and served as a principal Nonconformist cemetery, the final resting place for notable figures such as John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, and William Blake. It was closed for burials in 1853 and later landscaped.

The monument is designated at Grade II for its well-preserved early 19th-century design and inscription, which exemplifies contemporary ideals of piety and womanhood. It also possesses group value in relation to other listed tombs within the Grade I registered Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.
