Description
This is an early 18th-century headstone located in the East Enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Made of Portland stone, the monument features an upright slab with a shaped top adorned with elaborate Baroque ornamentation in bold relief. The design includes fluted Corinthian pilasters that frame an auricular cartouche, while scrolled volutes and palm fronds encircle an armorial panel above. The inscription on the headstone is no longer legible.
Bunhill Fields was established as a burial ground in 1665 and became a significant Nonconformist cemetery, being the final resting place for notable figures such as John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, and William Blake. The site was closed for burials in 1853 and transformed into a public park in 1867, later undergoing re-landscaping after war damage in 1964-65.
The headstone is recognized for its distinctive craftsmanship as an example of early 18th-century Baroque funeral sculpture and holds group value with other listed tombs in the east enclosure of the Grade I registered Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.
