Description
The monument to Elizabeth Esdaile is a headstone located in the west enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, dating from the mid-18th century. It is made of Portland stone and features an upright slab with a shaped top resembling a pediment supported by volutes. Beneath the top, there is rich relief carving, which is now much worn, depicting cherubs, clouds, and a sunburst. The inscription commemorates Elizabeth Esdaile, who died in 1742 at the age of two years, ten months, and 23 days, as well as her mother, also named Elizabeth, who may have died in 1747.
Bunhill Fields was first established as a burial ground in 1665. Its location just outside the City boundary and its status as an independent cemetery made it a significant site for Nonconformist burials, including notable figures such as John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, and William Blake. The burial ground was closed in 1853 and transformed into a public park in 1867, later being re-landscaped after war damage in 1964-1965.
The monument is recognized for its quality as a mid-18th century Baroque tomb sculpture and its legible inscription. It holds group value with other listed tombs in the west enclosure, contributing to the historical significance of the Grade I registered Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.
