Description
The monument to Ann Davis is a Grade II listed headstone located in the west enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Erected in 1803, it is made of sandstone and features an upright stone slab with a shaped top. The main inscription commemorates Miss Ann Davis, who passed away at the age of 21. Accompanying the inscription is a memorial verse that reflects ideals of feminine virtue.
In addition to Ann Davis, the monument also records the burials of Hugh Jones and his son John.
Bunhill Fields was established as a burial ground in 1665 and became a significant Nonconformist cemetery, known for the burials of notable figures such as John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe, and William Blake. The cemetery was closed for burials in 1853 and transformed into a public park in 1867, with further landscaping completed after war damage in 1964-1965.
The monument is recognized for its well-preserved early 19th-century design, featuring good letter carving and an inscription that reflects the values of its time. It holds group value with other listed tombs in the west enclosure of the burial ground.
