Description
The monument is a chest tomb dating to approximately 1797, located within the South Enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Constructed from Portland stone with a brick plinth, the tomb takes the form of a stone chest with a moulded lid and base. It has plain corner pilasters and inscription panels. An unusual feature is that the inscriptions are arranged across both the pilasters and the panels, with those on the north side being more legible than those facing south.
William Aldridge (1737-1797) was a prominent Independent minister of the late 18th century. After a period of a dissipated youth, he devoted himself to preaching. He was associated with the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion and subsequently became minister at the Independent congregation in Jewry Street, London.
Bunhill Fields Burial Ground was first enclosed in 1665 and became London’s leading Nonconformist cemetery, including the graves of notable figures such as John Bunyan and Daniel Defoe. The monument is well-preserved and commemorates an important religious figure with a close connection to Bunhill Fields. It has group value with other listed tombs within the South Enclosure of the Grade I registered Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.
