Description
The monument is a headstone of 1816, located within the Middle enclosure of Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. It is constructed from Portland stone and takes the form of a simple upright slab with a shaped top. The inscription commemorates Reverend Dan Taylor, alongside his daughter Jane Wallis and son-in-law John Harden. A text from Revelations 21:4 is also inscribed: 'And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.'
Dan Taylor (1738-1816) was a Baptist minister and the founder of the New Connexion, a significant federation of Baptist churches. Bunhill Fields was first enclosed as a burial ground in 1665 and became London's principal Nonconformist cemetery. The monument is listed at Grade II for its historical significance, commemorating a key figure in the Baptist church, and for its group value with other listed tombs within the Middle enclosure of the Grade I registered Bunhill Fields Burial Ground.
