Description
The monument to John Conder is a Grade II listed structure located within Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. It consists of a headstone and a smaller footstone, both renewed in 1869. The monument is constructed from Portland stone and was whitewashed.
The footstone is inscribed with the dedication 'Dr Conder 1781'. The headstone bears details of John Conder's life and career, including an English translation of his original Latin epitaph: 'I have sinned, I have repented, I have trusted, I have loved, I shall rest, I shall arise, and through the grace of Christ, however unworthy, I shall reign.' An inscription at the base records the monument's renewal in 1869.
John Conder (1714-1781) was a noted Independent minister, preacher, and tutor. He served at Hog Hill Independent Church in Cambridge and later became a classical tutor and minister in London. He authored numerous lectures and sermons and was later awarded an honorary doctorate.
Bunhill Fields Burial Ground was first enclosed in 1665 and became a significant cemetery for Nonconformists. It is the burial place of many notable religious and intellectual figures. The monument has group value with other listed tombs within the north section of the burial ground, which is itself registered as a Grade I site.
