Description
A row of 23 terraced houses was built around 1820 in Islington. The houses are constructed of yellow and brown stock brick with obscured roofs, and have brick party-wall stacks. They follow a side-hall entrance plan with a staircase within. Each house has three storeys and a basement, though numbers 128, 134 and 140 also have attics, each with two windows.
The ground floor features gauged brick round-arched openings. Steps lead to the entrance in the right-hand bay, where there's a doorway with fluted one-quarter column jambs supporting a corniced head. The original six-panelled door is still present, along with a fanlight, though the fanlights vary in pattern; number 118 has a 20th-century fanlight while numbers 120, 122, 126, 136, 138, 140 and 150 have plain fanlights. Six-pane sash windows are found throughout the property. Numbers 118-122, 126-134, 140-144, 148-158 have six-pane sashes with curved and radial glazing bars on the ground floor. Gauged brick flat arches are above the upper-floor sashes. The first floor has full-length sashes, number 120 having a three-pane sash. These are set in round-arched, panelled recesses, linked by stucco imposts, though the detail at number 146 was altered and rebuilt without these recesses. Coupled iron-bracketed balconies are present, with number 118 having individual balconies and numbers 146 missing its balcony with many added or renewed in the 20th century. The iron railings to the balconies have a Gothic style trefoil and arch pattern, numbers 138 and 158 featuring an alternate pattern. The second floor has three-pane sashes at numbers 120, 122 and 158.
The houses have plain parapets with a brick string course and stone coping. Number 128 has been reworked and set back, while the brick string course is visible at numbers 142-144. Stone coping is present at numbers 146-148 and 156-158, and modillioned brick and stuccoed cornices are at numbers 150-154. Attached cast-iron area railings with urn finials are also part of the property. These houses were formerly known as Arundel Terrace. The interiors have not been inspected. Number 140 has been altered on the ground floor with the removal of the entrance hall wall.
